Eat. Burn. Repeat: April 2017

Minus 2 pounds, guys!

Can I just start without any introduction? I am so excited I can barely sit down and write because for the first time since I have announced that I am trying to lose weight (and it was three months ago!) I actually have some result to show.

In my first month, funny enough, I actually put on weight. In my second month, I got back to where I started. Finally, in my third month I lost 2 pounds. I would be much more proud to share this news if I worked out everyday, but the truth is I didn’t.

April was a month of traveling in Singapore and Sri Lanka. I was worried about sustaining a healthy lifestyle while eating my way around Asia. If you don’t know anything about Sri Lankan food, read this guide How to Eat Like a Sri Lankan I wrote a while back, and you will understand my anxiety. In short, it’s rice and curry, all day every day.

I ended up working out twice in April. Not twice per week, twice in a month. Which is a huge scale down from 4 work outs per week in March. But thanks to my active lifestyle, swimming in the ocean, climbing mountains and running around Colombo meeting friends and relatives I was able to stay in shape. Not one day in the month of April was spent on the couch watching TV or in front of computer writing. Which is both good and bad. Good because I eventually lost weight, bad because I have a ton of articles to write now.

If you are following me on Instagram (@thefoodiemiles) you know that 90% of the time I ate authentic Sri Lankan food and not salad leaves. My everyday started with roti (coconut flat bread), followed by lunch of rice with 4-5 curries, and dinner of string hoppers (how do I even explain it? Suffice it to say, carbs!). 

Controlling rice portions helped a lot. Yes, my family laughed at the amount of rice I put on my plate during lunch but smaller rice portions meant I could try all the curries I wanted without feeling guilty or overeating. I also didn’t snack in between meals, mostly because I simply didn’t have the time.

I am back home and back on track with my workouts. It’s Thursday and I have already completed 3 sessions this week! Fingers crossed May will bring some good news!
